Keep avoiding AVG 8 at all costs!
Aug 13th, 2008 | 4 Comments

I’d like to revisit my original post, which became quite popular and even got comments from the people Grisoft. I was also contacted via email by these individuals who offered support and even gave me a 3-month trial for the network I was having problems with originally. So lets fast forward about 4 months, and what do we have now? A very unstable application that still crashes workstations and servers. I removed AVG from the network I had it on (about 15 workstations and 2 servers) and installed Avast!. No more issues since. No more random reboots and crashes, which are absolutely unacceptable in a production environment.

I will give Avast a spin for about a month, and then I’ll go ahead and purchase their year license. So far, no issues and installing and maintaining databases is extremely easy. I have also received numerous comments from people who had no issue with AVG 7.5 but started having all sorts of problems with version 8.0. For example, Buck:

I was running 7.5 antivirus on a dell laptop with no problems at all. I upgraded to 8.0 antivirus with spyware, download went find but after it installed I lost my internet connection, wireless and DSL. When I do have internet connection I can’t open internet explorer at all. I also use counter spy and spyblaster on this laptop. No longer running those programs but has made no difference at all. There is something in this program that will not allow me to open internet explorer. Also when I run a computer scan one time it will take about 40 mins for a full scan the next time 2.5 hours. As a long time user of AVG I’am not a happy camper. At this point in time waiting for tech support for help.

Or what Debbie has to say

Been using AVG 7.5 with no problems, had to renew my license and it upgraded me to 8.0 and everything went wrong, The system scan was still running 14 hours later, could not receive my mail (I use Incredimail), system was running slow and freezing up. I emailed tech support two days ago and am still waiting for an answer to my problems. I uninstalled 8.0 and reinstalled 7.5 and everything is working fine. Don’t know what I am going to do when I am forced to upgrade to 8.0. If anyone has any answers please help me out.

And this comments go on and on about how horrible AVG 8.0 is. So, what do I recommend? As a free AV solution, get Avast! which requires you to sign up and receive a key, but hey, thats better than having a crashing computer, right?

For paid service, I would definitely recommend NOD32 from ESET.I have tried it and in my experience it a very good AV solution.

      Hi my friend!

I have had extremely much funny things and crashes going on on my newtork since I upgraded 7.5 to this 8.0 version in February. I’ve been struggling with tech support since then and have to give them one problem report after another, which they probably never read. I feel lika a Grisoft employee doing the bugfinding they should have been doing before releasing this crappy shit to public. Then I’ve also been paying for all this troubles. Noting on their thec forum or FAQ just tells me that they cover this issues up. Could You recommend i replacement in Avast and I’ll change right on the spot ?

A long-time user of AVG: AVG 8.0 Network Addition on Terminal Servers also randomly locks down port 3389 and permanently locks down port 80. This wreaked havoc with our Sheriff Patrol Cars utilizing remote desktop services and made our lives living hell. Anyone else experience this?
