I’ve gotten lots of questions regarding the tethering of a Windows Mobile phone to a PC. There are lots of tutorials out there but I will attempt to show you how to do it regardless of the operating system. I’ve tried it with a Pantech Duo and a BlackJack, and it will work as long as you can find the IntShrUI executable under the Windows folder of your phone. I will not get into specifics, but rather give a general outline of how it is done. Disclaimers: 1. Make sure you have an unlimited data plan. 2. For OSX and Linux, you need bluetooth connectivity, so if your computer doesn’t have built-in bluetooth, pick up a cheap USB dongle from your favorite store.

Via USB (only on Windows): the easiest way of tethering your WM phone is via ActiveSync (or Vista Mobile Device Center if your are running Vista). Download and install the latest version of ActiveSync (not necesary if you’re using Vista, just use the Vista Mobile Device Center). Once the phone is hooked and you’ve created a parthership (create one even if you aren’t going to sync data with the PC), browse for IntShrUI using the File Explorer on the phone. Its under the Windows folder. Run the executable. Select USB under PC Connection and hit Connect. BOOM! Thats it. Now you can browse the interwebs.

Via Bluetooth (Windows/Linux/OSX): I will explain the method I use under OSX, but it will work with any *nix flavor as long as you can create a partnership between your phone and the computer and create a PAN. So, just as I said, make you phone discoverable and partner up the phone and the computer. Then (as in the USB portion) browse for IntShrUI using the File Explorer on the phone. Its under the Windows folder. Run the executable. Select Bluetooth PAN under PC Connection and hit Connect. Then start file sharing (or Connect to network under OSX) on the computer. BOOM! You should be able to surf the www.

I use this method all the time on my Macbook Pro and on my EEE (under Windows or Linux) when I’ve got a strong 3G signal on my Pantech Duo. I’ve tried it in LA, San Francisco and Vegas, basically because I refuse to pay $10 for a day of Wifi. The speed is decent and it get the job done. Also, this is a huge battery drainer so I usually plug the phone even if I’m on my Mac, just to keep it the phone charged up. For those who were expecting detailed instructions, I’m sorry, but this was not the intention of this article. The intention was to show how versatile a WM phone can be.
