More clear objectives for this blog

I’ve been reading lots of other blogs, specifically blogs about blogging (hold on, that is not redundant) and the reason why I’ve been doing this is because I want to increase the readership of this blog and potentially monetize. After doing this bit of research I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to define a couple of elements:

1. A Business Plan: as John Chow explains, one needs a defined business plan, and more specifically, one needs a goal defined over a time-period. Based on this, my goal is to have 300 RSS subscribers and 500 unique daily visits by January 2009 (a year from now). Right now, I’ve got around 30 subscribers (according to Feedburner).

2. A define a niche for this blog: so far, I’ve just a mixture of personal and PC/Tech related original articles written here, and seeing as I still get somes hits due to my IT articles (namely the $500 Vista PC one written 11 months ago), I will start posting mostly IT related articles. As an IT consultant, there are a million original ideas out there, I just need to capture a a few on a regular basis and blog about them. And as for PC/Technology/Gadgets, I’ve got DigitalWiseGuy and Gadgetell as outlets.

3. A Professionally designed theme: I just redesigned this blog, as stated in my last entry, and that will have to do for now, as far as design goes. I am pretty happy with it, and even though I am not a seasoned web designer, this exercise in trying to design an original theme has taught me lots of things relating to CSS/Web design.

It does pay to design your own theme. It teaches you lot about Wordpress. I just did my first. If you give it away with a link back in the footer it can also bring some good traffic.
